Barcelona Orphanage - Mitchel's Plain, South Africa
Julius and Irene are a couple in their mid-60's. Julius is the pastor of a local church in the Mitchel's Plain area near Cape Town, South Africa. Mitchel's Plain is the largest township in the Cape Town area, populated by nearly 800,000 of the poorest of the poor. They live there in the township on the church property.
Just over two years ago, the first of 10 orphans was dropped off at their door. More were to follow. Seven of ten of these precious kids are HIV+. Julius and Irene are doing their best to care for these children with very special needs. Every one of the kids has dealt with emotional, physical and/or sexual abuse and abandonment.
Thanks to an Extreme Response donor, the boys house at the orphanage has been completed and furnished. ER founder Jerry Carnill, Ed Newman and Mark visited the orphanage in April of 2006 to hand out school supplies and gifts.
